Lego Competition

Lego competition much more than child’s play

Great Bend Middle School gifted students of Tina Steinert are gearing up for the Fort Hays State University Lego Mindstorms competition.

Students are learning to assemble Lego Mindstorm robots using construction kits. Students can enter different competitive events and must problem solve how to build a winning design.

Once students have constructed a base, they use the Lego programming software to create a series of commands and sequences to program the robot. They use the program to learn things like how to create a four-point turn or detect a color of light and run a certain function in response to that detection.

Robotics competitions are a great way for students engage in creative thinking and problem solving with direct applications. They also learn to correct their problems and try again.

Last year GBMS students finished with a second-place medal at the competition. Several teams are competing this year with the hope of bringing home even more hardware.
