Middle school counselors work in a number of different ways to help students achieve success on academic, personal, and social levels. Counselors can also help students with interest surveys and career information that will help them select high school classes.
There are a variety of services to assist students.
Peer Helper Program
Peer Helpers are students who have received instruction in the basic techniques of helping and tutoring. They are selected because of their academic skills, and their committment to making their school better. They are not counselors and do not give advice, but are willing to listen to their classmates and help with schoolwork.
Classroom Presentations / Visitations
Counselors go into the classrooms to give presentations and talks. In addition to the information given, the visitations allow students the opportunity to become comfortable with the counselors.
Team Meetings
Counselors attend weekly meetings with each team of core teachers. Teachers can express student concerns and counselors can monitor individual student progress.
Individual Student Counseling
The goal of the school counselor is to act as an advocate for each individual student. School counselors are not therapists, but can assist students with school-related problems and serve as a liaison with outside agencies.
Parent Support
School counselors can work with parents through parent / teacher conferences or consultations, guide parents to reference materials through a parent library, and make referrals to outside agencies.
