Great Bend Girls Soccer aims for first State Soccer Appearance

By JESSICA MARSTON
Prep Editor, Great Bend High School

After last year’s 8-10 record and a second-round regional loss to Hays, the Lady Panthers are eager to get back on the soccer field and show what they are made of.

“Taking third in WAC after placing fifth and fourth the previous two years was one of our biggest accomplishments last season,” said head coach Paul Zamarripa. “Last year we made it to the second round of regionals after winning eight games, tying our previous season record, and after losing the school’s all-time leading scorer and seven starters.”

Zamarripa has been head coach of the team for the past two years. Last season, the Lady Panthers lost Belinda Arias, Jordan Werth and Amera Saucedo.

“We have seven starters returning - five juniors and two seniors - including Larami Klein, Shatlyn Marshall, Perla Hernandez, Gabby Moreno and Alicia Segura,” said Zamarripa. “You need to expect to have an experienced team that will rely on sophomores to step up.”

The Lady Panthers have begun work on their scoring and goaltending to improve their season record. The girls have never been to state, but they plan to make their first visit in Class 6A this year.

“We had 54 girls try out for the team,” Zamarripa said. “This is the first year we have had to make cuts since 1999. In the end, we kept 12 freshmen, 12 sophomores, five juniors and six seniors. We will play in our first tournament this year, the Titan Classic in Wichita. We have 11 road games and five home games this season.”

The Panthers will debut March 30, when they take on Wichita South in its home tournament.
