Great Bend golf team's goals: improve, have fun
By JESSICA MARSTON

The Great Bend golf team battled a great deal of obstacles throughout the 2008 season.
The weather made courses difficult to play, but the team showed continued improvement throughout the season. The boys produced their best score at the end of the last regular meet of the year.
“This year we have 22 boys out for golf: four seniors, one junior, nine sophomores, eight freshmen,” coach Troy Stein said. “We are looking for big contributions from our seniors, Ryan Gotche, Jared Boone, E.J. Hiss and Miles Casey. Our goals for the year are to show improvement and have fun. Hopefully, we can compete for the WAC championship and qualify for state.”
The golfers are part of a tough Western Athletic Conference. Last year, Hays won the conference title and Dodge City placed second.
Great Bend had its first meet Tuesday, April 7, at the Salina Central Invitational. The boys’ season opener was scheduled for April 6, but the tournament at Salina Municipal Golf Course was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. Manhattan won the tournament, followed by Salina South (second place) and then the WAC’s Dodge City (third place). Ten teams participated.
Next up for Great Bend is the McPherson Invitational, which is set for Thursday, April 9.
