USD 428 holds a free summer food program that is open to any child in the district age eighteen or younger. The program coincides with summer school classes, generally during the month of June. There is no paperwork necessary to participate in the program. Any child age eighteen or younger may eat for free.

The participating locations are: Park Elementary School, 1801 Williams; Riley Elementary School, 1515 - 10th Street; Washington Early Childhood Center, 2523 Lakin, Eisenhower Elementary School, 1212 Garfield; and Lincoln Elementary School, 5630 Broadway.

School Food Service prepares an average of 3,400 meals and 700 breakfasts daily for seven USD 428 attendance centers, two private schools and one day care center.

Menus are planned according to United States
Department of Agriculture guidelines. School
breakfasts meet one-fourth and school lunches
meet one-third of a student's daily nutritional
needs.

The Kansas State Board of Education recognized
the USD 428 food service program with the
Award of Excellence in Food Service for five
consecutive years. The model program has also
received national commendation by the United
States Department of Agriculture. Great Bend
High School and Park Elementary School have
received Awards for Excellence for nutrition
education and special events.
